Kanna Extract 5% Mesembrine Products

Sceletium tortuosum is the botanical name of kanna, and mesembrine is one of the alkaloids found in that plant. A kanna product may be sold as a general extract or as an extract standardized to a stated mesembrine level.

It indicates that the extract is standardized to a declared mesembrine concentration. It does not mean that 5% of the entire tablet is mesembrine, and it is not the serving size. Check both the extract amount and the standardization statement on the label.

Mesembrine is one of the naturally occurring alkaloids associated with Sceletium tortuosum, also known as kanna. “Mesembrine alkaloids” refers to mesembrine and related plant alkaloids, not to a separate plant ingredient.

Kanna extract is a broad name for an extract of Sceletium tortuosum. A mesembrine-standardized extract lists a defined mesembrine concentration as a marker of consistency. The percentage and the milligrams per serving describe different things, so review both on the label.
